Enter the Haggis and We Banjos 3 |
Grand Opera House |

Somewhat disappointing, but they suffered from following We Banjo 3. In spite of them being electric and including a bagpipe, all the energy seemed to dissipate from the room during their set. I'll give them another chance if they come around again though. |

We've seen many performances over the years, but this is probably the first French jazz act. We are not big jazz fans, but we gave it a try. They were pleasant enough, but nothing particularly unusual, other than they all were constantly smiling, a very unjazzy like trait. |

Third time we have seen them, and this was by far the best. Strong connection with the audience and a good time had by all. Well except for the unfortunate 2 year old dragged onto the stage for the encore. |

Have never been a big bluegrass fan, but these guys may have turned me around. Impeccable playing and tight harmonies made for a feel good evening. |

Tenth anniversary of this Masters Players concert presented by Xiang Gao. Always a treat, and I think we've only missed it once. Nice mix as usual with a little harder edge this time. Included performers from China, Afghanistan, Honduras and Israel as well as students. |

A bit too laid back. While I generally enjoyed the tunes, I kept drifting off. Things picked up for the encore, but it was too late. |

Have been doing their Beatles tribute for 33 years, and we saw them many years ago, but they seemed to improve with age. It took awhile to see them as their characters but the clever (though highly rehearsed) stage banter slowly sucked us in. |

Still going strong at age 76, and our second performance, the first being in 2011. Very similar show, but that's OK. He did have a few new songs that weren't bad, but I enjoyed the classics better. |

Unknown to us, he provided a flashy piano accompaniment for Tom Rush, and got the chance to do a few of his own songs on guitar. Great voice and I expect we will hear more from him. |

The entire classic rock opera Tommy performed by a bluegrass band. One of my favorite albums of all time which has been covered in almost every medium gets a new high energy twist in this acoustic version. The band opened with a half hour set of their own stuff which was just as enjoyable. Looses a star because the bimbo sitting next to me was on her phone throughout the show which was extremely irritating. |

A masterclass in American pop music from a Boston Brahman. A bit pompous and possibly over compensating for being much less known than his older brother. Still this Berkeley College of Music professor sang some good songs and was a very good guitar picker (according to him, the third best in the US). |

Prefer Celtic Classic if it is not on the same weekend as Bike to the Bay as it was this year, so back to MusikFest as an alternative. Saw African Benga Stars, old favorite Seamus Kennedy, The Hillbenders for the second time this year The John Byrne Band and one of daughter's favorites, Andy Frasco. |

Took a chance on the former front-man for Smashing Pumpkins, but it was a disappointing concert experience. I liked a few of the songs, but they all sounded the same. He even threw in three covers and managed to make such diverse acts as Tim Hardin, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd all sound the same as well. He rarely spoke and the crowd concentrated mostly on their phones. |

Recommended by a friend and it was a thoroughly enjoyable through back to an era of big band tunes, but on an international scale. Mostly original and upbeat tunes sung in many languages. |

We've seen the full Preservation Hall band several times, both here and in New Orleans, but this traveling quintet did a fine job keeping up the tradition. Heard an interview with Jimmy Carter, founder and leader of the Blind Boys, on NPR recently and was most excited to see them. He started the group 72 years ago and is still going strong. I was less familiar with Irma Thomas, knowing only her hit covered by the Rolling Stone, "Time Is On My Side". Ironically, she didn't sing it tonight but she did cover other catchy R&B material since her first record in 1960. |
