Live at The Baby Grand |
Wilmington, DE |
|
Very personable multi-instumentalist singer/songwriter and storyteller. 33 albums to his credit, covering traditional folk, topical, kids tunes, dulcimer, and very poignant and moving songs like "Christmas In The Trenches" below. The only disappointment was that there were less than 100 in the audience, which was unfortunate. |

Cosy Sheridan |
|
North Elk Coffeehouse |
North East, MD |
|
We first saw Cosy 6 years earlier at Musikfest, and Barbara immediately bought 4 of her albums. Not much seemed to have changed since then, although she has added her partner TR Richie as backup and the show didn't dwell on her darker themes. |

The Guthrie Family Rides Again |
|
Grand Opera House |
Wilmington, DE |
|
The return of the Guthrie Family - supersized. We saw Arlo with his son Abe and daughter Sara Lee six years ago, but for this tour he brought the whole family - 4 kids and 7 grandkids. Lot's of fun. It was if we were sitting in their home for a holiday get together. Arlo invited old friend David Bromberg to sit in on a few songs, and he continued to play through the whole show. |

Béla Fleck & The Africa Project |

Continually pushing the envelope, Béla explores the origins of the banjo in his Throw Down Your Heart project. Joined onstage were several African musicians playing variations of the primitive stringed instument. |

Survivor of the 60's British Invasion with a mix of new stuff and reworked Kinks classics. Cynical and somewhat bitter, yet very engaging. Plenty of sing alongs in the mostly acoustic concert played with guitarist Bill Shanley, and a rocking closing backed by the opening band, The 88. Refreshing to see a rocker mature gracefully. |

Return performance from the American celtic band. Somewhat different lineup, but still led by sassy Brooklynite Joanie Madden and co-original member Mary Coogan. Nice addition of young Irish singer Michelle Burke. |

The party band from Titanic. Classic pub band, with plenty of rollicking drinking songs, but being the fourth night out this week, we left after the first set. |

Fit As A Fiddle |
|
Grand Opera House |
Wilmington, DE |
|
Delaware Symphony Orchestra pops concert with an enjoyable opening set, especially the quirky Syncopated Clock, but the headliner, Andy Stein, was a disappointment. In spite of being a regular on Prairie Home Companion, he was not as funny as he thought, and a bit too full of himself. A few nice Gershwin tunes, but his personality spoiled it. |

Kingston Trio |

At what point does a classic band become a cover band? The band has been around for 50+ years and banjoist Bill Zorn has been a member for 30 years, yet he joined several years after their last hit record. The music still sounds good, but there was something artificial about the performance. |

Just as much fun as her previous performance, she covered a little new ground with a cover of James Brown and put lyrics to a Santana tune, but her African rhythms were the highlight. Very upbeat and full of life. |

iMusic 3 Ode to Earth |
|
Mitchell Hall |
Newark, DE |
|
Xiang Gao continues to amaze with his third multimedia collaborative effort, this time in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Another big closing number, an original composition backed by a youth choir, "Sleep Now, O Earth". During intermission, a CANR promo video played that included three of our students, Matt Fischel, Masayuki Shimizu and Kristin Staats (Borda). |

Brother and Seven Nations |

One of our favorite Celtic bands in our own back yard! We've seen Brother numerous time at Musikfest, so It was a kick to see them walking distance from our home. Most of the crowd was at the games for other reasons, but the few that paid attention were appreciative. |

Moving tribute to veterans hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise. We were there for the dress rehearsal on Saturday night, so there were substitutes for Colin Powell and Brad Paisley. Lionel Richie was one of the few performers we knew, but it really wasn't about the music. More info here. |

Classic progressive rockers, still going strong. Annie Haslam could still hit all the high notes, although Gary Brooker's voice wasn't quite as strong as it once was. A few good new tunes from both of them, and of course, many of the classics. Closing the night with one of best songs of all time, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which included an unrecorded verse: She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died.' Program

Marc Cohn & Suzanne Vega |
|
Grand Opera House |
Wilmington, DE |
|
While Suzanne Vega gave a satifactory though uninspired performance, Marc Cohn was a very pleasant surprise. Very engaging, actively sought input and requests, and provided a very moving backstory for "Walking In Memphis". (Hint, it all happened, except maybe the walking 6 ft. off the ground part.) |

Emmylou Harris |
|
Grand Opera House |
Wilmington, DE |
|
I imagine headliners struggle with the selection of opening acts, wanting to present upcoming talent, yet risk being upstaged. This was a case of the later. Previously unknown Low Anthem, multi-instrumentalists and multi-styled, stole the show. Emmylou was good, but a bit of a letdown. |

We were blown away at first seeing them 2 yrs. ago, but if bubbles and an accordion were added, this could have been the Lawrence Welk Christmas Special. Music was still good, but the show was much too cheesy. |

I happened to be in the proper mood, and found myself in a trance during his opening song cycle, maybe helped by his request for no applause. The second half of "hits" was equally fun. A comment made about his father attending school at St. Andrews fell surprisingly flat. Opening was half sister Lucy who was also very charming and engaging. |

Only got a taste of his humor and charm at A Prairie Home Companion show last year. Much more enjoyable seeing his whole act in the second row of the cozy Baby Grand. The sets were heavy on the classics, but also featured his newest album, the first in 35 years. |

Johnny Clegg |
|
Grand Opera House |
Wilmington, DE |
|
Long before Paul Simon discovered township jive, Johnny Clegg was melding Zulu rhythms with rock, folk and Celtic traditions. While it is usually em bar rasing to watch white boys sing black music, from Pat Boone to Michael Bolton to Eminem, Clegg was on a mission to integrate apartheid South Africa. Thirty years later he continues to evolve and put on a great show. Still, he should leave the dancing to the natives. |

Our first show at an exciting new Wilmington venue was an unfortunately disappointing concert experience. At the performers' insistence, there were very few seats available forcing us to stand for 2+ h0urs before our aching backs forced us to skip out early. A response to a complaining email assured me that reserved seating will be available for future shows. We will certainly give it another try, but it wasn't a pleasant start. (article) |

iMusic 4: China Magpie |
|
Mitchell Hall |
Newark, DE |
|
The least enjoyable iMusic so far due to the lack of the multi media enhancements of past shows and no guest artists or student participation. In spite of the disappointment, it was an interesting showcase for Xiang Gao's crossover group China Magpie featuring an amazing singer and sheng (Chinese mouth organ) player, Wu Tong. |

A disappointing washout this year. Had planned on two days and enjoying two new celtic groups, but the skys opened up Saturday night and cut short the show by RUNA, and Paddy and The Pale Boys was just a bar band. Was raining Sunday morning, so we headed home. Pleasant surprises were the MarchFourth Marching Band, an electric Mardis Gras band complete with stilt walkers and hula hoops . |

Wolrd Cafe Live |

Much more pleasant experience upstairs than our our first visit to the larger downstairs venue. Had a preshow dinner and retained upfront seats for the i"intimate evening with" Erin McKeown. Although she didn't play the one song I was familiar with, Blackbirds, she performed a nice range of styles, some not yet recorded, and matched them with a pleasant personality. |

Not a big country fan, but if she wrote all the lyrics to country songs, I certainly could be. Great songs, tight tunes and good band, and engaging personality. Very enjoyable. Opening act, Tift Merritt was also a delight and someone to watch for in the future. |

Been a fan for four decades, and finally got to see him perform in a solo acoustic show. Joined onstage only with eighteen guitars and a keyboard, he announced early on that there was no set list and would play whatever struck him at the time. Naturally, this resulted in continuous shouting requests, which annoyed Barbara to no end. Played for over three hours and still didn't get to all the "hits". Marred slightly by a few fluffed lyrics, chords and cracking voice. Also, could have had some more energy which a band would have provided. |
