01-14-00 Tito Puente Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote

Got to see him shortly before his passing in May. Still vibrant to the end.

02-11-00 Hesperus with Bonnie Rideout Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
It's hard for us not to enjoy a celtic music show, but this one was pretty boring.
02-13-00 Buckwheat Zydeco Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
20th Anniversary Bayou Blast with the funky Mem Shannon & Membership as opening act. More than made up for the lack of energy two nights earlier.
02-19-00 Christina Harrison North Elk Coffeehouse North East, MD notenote
Local Scottish lassie who seemed to have an off night. Not unlike a week earlier, good celtic tunes, but not very exciting.
02-28-00 The Drummers Of West Africa Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
And now for something completely different... direct from Dakar, Senegal, the Doudou N'Diaye Rose Percussion Orchestra with 35 Rose family members playing the Khine, the M'Balax, the Meung Meung, Sabars, Saouroubas and more. Overwhelming.
03-12-00 The Newport Jazz Millennium Celebration Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Starring Howard Alden, guitar; Randy Brecker, trumpet; Joel Helleny, trombone; Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Lew Tabackin, sax/flute; Cedar Walton, piano; and the Nicholas Payton Quintet. Classic jazz tunes mixed with some new stuff.
03-13-00 Dave Mason Band Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Mary Arden Collins opened and was so excited to be in front of the hometown crowd, that she was more animated and appealing than the main act. Dave Mason who made one of the best albums of all time with "Alone Together", plus putting out a couple of great albums with Traffic, seemed to just be going through the motions. Why some talented people aren't able to continue to be creative is a sad mystery.
03-15-00 Nancy Griffith Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenotenote
What a sweetheart. Was only a casual fan before the show, but she won me over instantly. She connected with the audience with her story telling as much as with her songs.
04-06-00 Preservation Hall Jazz Band Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Always a good time. We've seen them several times, both in N'Awlins and the touring group, and the tunes don't change, but it never gets old. This band included original member Narvin Henry Kimball on banjo and Frank Desmond (with the red socks) on trombone who has performed on every record.
04-07-00 Terence Blanchard - Jazz in Film Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
The most memorable part of the evening was the pre-show hors d'oeuvres, black and tans and lecture with quests with Darryl Roberts and Kerry Anne. The concert itself was boring.
07-06-00 Shawn Colvin Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Pleasant and enjoyable, but not very dynamic.
04-08-00 Eddie From Ohio Rockwood Park Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Not quite Folk, not quite Alternative, and not from Ohio, but this Virginia foursome puts on a very appealing and lively show.
07-14-00 Brian Wilson Mann Music Center Philadelphia, PA notenotenotenote

Completing my first concert experience of seeing a Brian Wilsonless Beach Boys. Obvious signs of his unstableness, and although he can no longer hit the high registers, he nailed a full reproduction of the entire Pet Sounds album. Wondermints provided the required tight harmonies. First experience of a crowd cheering every attempt at a high note, even though he rarely hit one.

Photo 08-06-00 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenotenote
Artisan, Entrain, Samite of Uganda, david m. bailey, Brother, Red Elvises, Diane Ponzio. Stayed at Ringing Rocks campground in Upper Black Eddy.
09-14-00 John Prine Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE note
One of my favorites from the 70's, but we unfortunately had terrible seats in the side balcony where the acoustics were atrocious. Probably the only time we experienced that at the Grand. It was a pretty full house, so rather than find better seats we left at intermission. Big disappointment.
10-05-00 Bale Folclorico da Bahai Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Carnival from Bahai, by African/Brazilian dancers, singers and musicians, based on Candomble, the African religion brought to Brazil by slaves in the 16th century.
10-16-00 Joan Baez Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenotenote
Unfortunately she had a terrible cold, yet it was the most enjoyable concert in quite some time. Possibly to protect her voice, she told a number of warm stories including ones about her mother who was sitting next to Barbara! Stacey Earle opened and also put on a nice show.
10-27-00 Art Garfunkle Bob Carpenter Center Newark, DE notenote
About what I expected. Nice voice, but not enough there to carry on as a solo performer. What was unexpected was his special guest backup singer whom I assumed might be his daughter until he introduced her as his wife.
11-10-00 Ramsey Lewis Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Very much enjoyed his performance in 1987, but this time was a disappointment. Can't explain what changed.
12-08-00 The Coasters/Drifters/Platters Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Fun night of nostalgia with some of the best silly songs , as well as some of the best love songs of all time.
12-19-00 Three Irish Tenors Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE note
Christmas from Dublin. How can you go wrong with Christmas songs sung by great Irish singers? I don't know, but it did.
01-28-01 Carmen Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenotenote
I keep telling myself I'm not a big opera fan, yet each time I do see one, I thoroughly enjoy it. It certainly helps when you know the music which everyone does for Carmen whether they know it or not. Got into the story as well.
02-11-01 Lou Rawls Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
One of the great soul voices of all time, but his best days are far behind. He had to let the audience hit the high notes for him. Sad.
05-20-01 Natalie MacMaster Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenotenote
Great show and not just because I got to dance with her in the aisle. Very personable and lively Cape Breton fiddler.
08-08-01 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenotenote

Vance Gilbert , Tempest both CD worthy

08-18-01 Cool Blues and Brews Riverfront Wilmington, DE note
Cool it wasn't. Good beer, but the lines were too long, and got bored of the blues out in the hot sun.
09-22-01 Ahmad Jamal Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
As with most jazz, I enjoyed this pianist and his trio when he stuck to melodic compositions. I'm sure the rhythmic and chordal alterations appeal to purists, but that's when he looses me.
10-07-01 The Jimmy Smith Group Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Master of the Hammond organ. Set the standard for others like Booker T to follow.
10-10-01 Mark O'Connor Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Interesting mix of fiddle tunes teamed with the Metamorphosen Chamber orchestra.
10-19-01 The Mercy Concert Mitchell Hall Newark, DE notenote
Tom Chapin, John Flynn and others in a charity concert.
11-23-01 The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Claudio Roditi, Paquito D'Rivera, Cyrus Chestnut, John Lee and Dennis Mackrel carry on Dizzy's memory. Could never replace seeing Dizzy shortly before his death, but still a nice show.
12-04-01 The Irish Rovers Christmas Show Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Only two originals, but the five current members have been together for 30 years. I love Christmas music, but most musicians, including the Rovers, should probably stick to their forte.
02-01-02 Ladysmith Black Mombasa Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Never tire of these guys. Hadn't realized earlier that is composed almost entirely of Joseph Shabalala's family - originally brothers, now cousins and sons. Good stuff.
02-10-02 Janis Ian Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Surprisingly disappointing. While I enjoyed her records, her live show was under whelming. Her personality was off putting and she showed little effort.
02-15-02 Alejandro Escovedo Milburn Stone Memorial Theatre Northeast, MD notenotenote
Didn't know him then, but it was a free concert, so what the heck. The band had car trouble and arrived late with no time for a sound check. Seemed like it was going to be a disaster, but he made at least one big fan that night.
03-22-02 The Marcus Robert Trio Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
"New Orleans Meets Harlem" A history of the development of jazz from Scott Joplin through Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk. Good tunes, but too clinical. They never seemed to break loose.
04-16-02 Paul McCartney Veterans Stadium Philadelphia, PA notenotenotenote
Finally. Driving USA Tour. A Beatle heavy set with pyrotechnics, and all the stage gimmicks unheard of in the days of the original songs. Live and Let Die, is one my least favorite songs of his, but it was fun live.
07-24-02 Norah Jones Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenotenote
Of all of the comp tickets we received from Erinn, this was probably the biggest score. Still relatively unknown, but it became her breakout year, earning 5 Grammies in 2003. Great performance, and there was no doubt she was headed for the big time.
09-27-02 Dr. John Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
A semi regular at the Grand, and although his many albums span many styles, his live shows stick to the basic Mardi Gras sound. Always fun, but I wish he would expand the set list.
10-16-02 Rubbing Elbows with Ian Anderson Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Jethro Tull unplugged. Anderson, and an acoustic backup band, do some Tull classics, a few solo numbers as well as numerous stories. Have never seen Jethro Tull, but this was a satisfying substitute.
10-17-02 Preservation Hall Jazz Band Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
The touring band, spreading the spirit of New Orleans,is a rotating cast of characters. This one included long time trombonist Frank Demond and his red socks. Frank has played on every recording and has been a member of the band since 1974. Let the good times roll.
Photo 10-25-02 B.J. Ward in Stand-Up Opera Mitchell Hall Newark, DE notenotenote
My father was a big fan of Victor Borge who provided an fun way to enjoy classical music. B.J. Ward does the same for opera. Great voice, very funny and it doesn't hurt that she was a former Playboy bunny.
12-03-02 The Kingston Trio Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
The classic folk trio formed in 1957, with original member Bob Shane keeping the campfire songs going. Other members have been in the group since 1976 and 1985, so have the act down pat.
01-12-03 Windam Hill's Winter Solstice Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Liz Story, Tracy Silverman and Philip Aaberg & Darol Anger. There are quite moments at home when New Age music fits the mood. Unfortunately, it's usually boring live.
03-09-03 David Seering Tribute to Sinatra The Arts Center at Okaloosa-Walton Community College Niceville, FL note
Family visit with parents. Mammy loved him, I found him to be a bit too smarmy.
08-09-03 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenote
12-05-03 The Irish Rovers Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Three original memebrs together for over 30 years. A couple of new members tried to update the sound, but it's still basically The Unicorn.
02-14-04 Mad Agnes & Christopher Williams 4W5 Cafe Wilmington, DE notenotenote
An enjoyable Valentine's night out at an unfortunately short lived club on Market Street. Mad Agnes is composed of three talented, distinct singer/songwriters who played separately and together à la CSN.
02-18-04 Mancini at the Movies Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Guilty pleasure. Henry Mancini's daughter Monica along with full orchestra perform Mancini classics accompanied by film clips.
02-21-04 David Bromberg with Richie Havens Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote

After a decade long performing hiatus, new Wilmington resident Bromberg has returned and teamed up with fellow Greenwich Village alumni, Richie Havens. A mix of classics, together and solo, with some new stuff thrown in.

03-19-04 Randy Newman Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Accompanied by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, he performed his music from movie soundtracks for the first half, followed by his songs in the second. While the orchestra was appropriate in the beginning, it seemed constrictive during his songs. It left no room for deviations or spontaneity.
08-10-04 Richard Thompson ticket Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenotenotenote
Great solo show in an intimate setting. Amazing guitar playing didn't need backup.
08-11-04 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenote

Cosy Sheridan and Dean Shostak with his Glass Armonica CD worthy.

08-24-04 Cyndi Lauper Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
We certainly lucked out on this comp. Last minute booking meant Erinn could treat us to open seats. As quirky and charming as expected and still a fireball of energy.
10-15-04 Celebrate The Blues Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
With Dr. John on piano, Charlie Musselwhite and his harmonica and Shemika Copeland belting out the blues, it was indeed a night of celebration. They each got to do solo stuff as well as an ensemble and presented a historical journey of the blues in the US.
Photo 08-08-05 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenotenote

Arcona Reel Band Photo , Seven Nations Photo (CD worthy) , Seamus Kennedy Photo, and Delaware surf rockers, the Elk Tones Photo

04-16-06 Paul McCartney First Union Center Philadelphia, PA notenotenotenote
A treat from my sister. Second time seeing Paul, and while tightly scripted and highly predicable, still a joy to see.
08-07-06 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenote

Most pleasant surprise of this year's festival was Bill Kirchen's performance of "Hot Rod Lincoln"

02-02-07 Dr. John Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Still a fun show, but starting to get old. His records cover a wide variety of styles, but live, he sticks to what the crowd wants.
02-23-07 Arlo Guthrie Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
The Guthrie Family Legacy Tour. Son Abe and daughter Sarah join Arlo to perform their own as well as Woody's songs. Arlo continues to be funny even with 40 year old jokes, but the family addition makes for a poignant show as well.
03-11-07 Ladysmith Black Mambazo Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
Never tire of these guys, although I could do without the venture into musical accompaniment for a few of the numbers.
05-20-07 Angélique Kidjo Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenotenote
High energy native of Benin not only got the crowd dancing in the aisles, but enticed Dot up to the stage to dance with her!
08-06-07 Various artists Musikfest Bethlehem, PA notenote

Another first time show of a long time favorite, the Moody Blues. Unfortunately, the weather was brutally hot, we could barely see the stage, every hit was played note for note, yet it was still enjoyable. Also first time for Slaid Cleaves and repeat performances by the Barynya Russian Balalaika Duo and a very funny Mike Cross and favorites, Brother.

10-07-07 Oliver Mtukudzi and the Black Spirits Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
I had played this Zimbabwean's Tuku Music album many times, so I thought I knew what I was in for, but was surprised at the high energy show that emphasized dance music more than his thoughtful lyrics.
10-12-07 Mary Black Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
Another surprise performance. We have several of her albums and expected an entirely Celtic show, but there were as many pop songs as celtic classics.
11-01-07 David Bromberg Big Band Reunion Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenotenote
We've seen the hometown boy numerous times, and performing with the big band is the best way. First experience with his wife's Angel Band which opened and turned out to be a treat.
Photo 11-18-07 Tinariwen Grand Opera House Wilmington, DE notenote
We've seen many unique acts over the years, yet this one was unlike anything that came before. A fascinating background as Touareg rebels from Mali, only adds to the appeal, yet seeing Saharan nomads slinging electric guitars was somewhat disconcerting.
12-04-07 Gráda The Baby Grand Wilmington, DE notenote

We should have loved it, traditional celtic big band, dancing, holiday tunes, yet it was somewhat forgettable.
