Frank Lloyd Wright designed home |
Fallingwater |
Mill Run, PA |
|
Wright's most famous house. Surprised by the small scale and impractical design elements. Roof was leaking day of our visit, which wasn't unusual, and the iconic cantilever balcony required temporary supports. |

Frank Lloyd Wright designed home |
Kentuck Knob |
Chalk Hill, PA |
|
Designed by Wright at age 86, a "Usonian" house still privately owned and just opened to the public last year. In a number of ways, we enjoyed it more than Fallingwater, particularly the hexagonal elements and balcony. |

Whale Watch Cruise |
San Juan Excursions |
San Juan Islands, WA |
|
Getting to the boat was as much of an adventure as the cruise itself. We missed the ferry to the island, so had to charter a 4-seater seaplane which was more thrilling than any amusement park ride. Seeing orca, gray and minke whales was icing on the cake. |

Dunsmuir Family Home |
Craigdarroch Castle |
Victoria, BC |
|
An 1870's Victorian “bonanza castle” built for a coal baron who ironically died before completion. Very impressive site overlooking the city with a great collection of stained glass windows. |

Bill Speidel's Underground Tour |
Pioneer Square District |
Seattle, WA |
|
Walking tour of the original Seattle sidewalks and streets (now one floor under the current streets), ending with an original Crapper toilet exhibit. We had an hysterical guide who reminded me of Lily Tomlin. |

17 years after the volcano blew out one side, damage is still quite evident in the fallen trees and clogged stream. |

Didn't have a preconceived notion of what it would look like, yet seeing it took away some of the mystique. |

Riverfront Center For The Arts |
Wilmington, DE |
|
Intended to the first of many blockbuster exhibits, and anchor of the redevelopment of Wilmington's waterfront. Blockbuster idea soon fell apart, but the riverfront thrived in spite of it. |
