I am a creature of habit and one of the traditions I will maintain is traveling on our anniversary. We made a pledge when we got married that we wouldn't exchange presents but would always make time to travel on our anniversary. We maintained that for 28 years, and often to a national park, so I spent a few days camping in a park we visited often. Odd and sad to travel solo, but glad I went. |

Valley Forge - July 2020 |

We always travel for Barbara's birthday, and had a trip to Germany booked, but 2020 required a creative alternative. The trips usually include a stop at a National Park, so today we took a day trip to a still closed park site, but we were able to purchase an audio tour and wander the grounds. |

Disney Cruise 2019 -Liverpool - September 2019 |
|
Day 7. In the Steps of the Beatles, Liverpool, England. A pilgrimage to the home of the greatest rock band of all time. Pleasantly surprised with Liverpool, as I was expecting a much grittier, shabby, industrial city, and only a little disappointed in the The Beatles Story museum where I didn't learn much. Drove around to see the sights of their homes and schools and stopped at both Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, giving a new perspective on a well known subject. |

Day 6. Bannockburn and Stirling: The Story of Robert the Bruce, Stirling, Scotland. The town of Stirling was very charming though we didn't get time to explore it. We were also rushed through the tour of the Stirling Castle which is one the more impressive castles we've seen. The museum of the Battle of Bannockburn was unique and we got a good overview of an historical event that was previously unknown to us. |

Buffalo - May 2019 |
|
My 95 year old father had only one item on his bucket list and that was to return one more time to our hometown. Lots of Buffalo food specialties washed down with local beers, a good time was had by all. |

First State National Historical Park - May 2019 |
|
Unable to travel this year, but we continued our anniversary tradition of visiting a National Park, and it was in our own backyard. The latest addition to the National Park Service and Delaware's first, includes existing sites that we should have visited long ago. We hit 3 of 7 sites starting with New Castle Court House, then up to Wilmington to tour The Old Swedes Church. Intended to visit the adjacent Fort Christina but it was closed, so moved on to Beaver Valley, the only natural site and the only one previously inaccessible to the public. Intended to do a short hike but it was far too muddy. Fortunately I had hiked there the week before, but we will have to return. |

A birthday present from Barbara to a city never previously visited. Main attraction was of course Graceland, and we stayed next door to the Mansion at The Guesthouse at Graceland. Visiting the museum and mansion took most of the first day, but we also managed to catch the last tour at Sun Studios. Next day included tours of the National Civil Rights Museum and Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Finished on Beale Street with dinner at B.B. Kings Blues Club. Had several other possibilities on the itinerary, but ran out of time. Might have to return. |

Mexico - May 2018 - Copper Canyon |
|
Highlight of the trip. Boarded the Chihuahua al Pacifico "Chepe" train through the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains to take us to the under appreciated Barrancas del Cobre, Copper Canyon in the State of Chihuahua. Four hikes in the canyon including a pre-dawn bird walk and another through a Tarahumara village. Stayed two nights in the Posada Mirador Hotel perched on the rim overlooking the canyon and somehow we scored a corner suite allowing us a 180 degree view. Visited a native boarding school for Tarahumara children where they showed off their world renowned running skills. The biggest thrill came at the only tourist attraction in the area. While most of the group took an aerial tram into the canyon, I braved what is billed as the world's longest zipline. One and half miles long, reaching speeds of 75 mph, it was both terrifying and exhilarating. Required a steep climb in the blistering desert to rejoin the group at the tram stop, but was a bucket list worthy memory. |

Mexico - May 2018 - El Fuerte |
|
Today we leave the State of Sonora and enter the State of Sinaloa to stay in another Pueblo Mágico, El Fuerte where we took a quick tour of the El Fuerte Museum. Stayed at another historic hotel, Posada del Hildago, which claims to be the birthplace of Zorro who graciously performed for the gringo tourists. |

Mexico - May 2018 - Alamos |
|
Today we hit the road driving through the Yaqui Republic with a lunch stop at Casa Torres in Navojoa before reaching our first Pueblo Mágico or Magic Town, Alamos. We stayed in a former convent, Casa de los Tesoros and had an informative tour of the old town. |

Our escorted tour with Gate 1 began on Sunday morning with a quick return to Mission San Xavier del Bac which wasn't on the program but we got more out of it by visiting it ourselves the day before. Then on to Nogales to cross into Sonora, Mexico. First stop was in Hermosillo for a short walk around the Plaza Zaragosa. Then on to San Carlos, formerly a sleepy fishing village, now growing into a snowbird retreat mostly for Canadians where we spent the first two nights. While there we took a wildlife cruise in the Sea of Cortes, visited North America's only commercial pearl farm and a cactus farm. |

Lancaster Co. - March 2018 |
|
Third trip to Central Pennsylvania since July. Wasn't part of a grand plan, it just so happened I got 3 separate travel deals too good to pass. This one, as well as the one last month, came from Travelzoo staying in a Historic Hotel of America in Leola, PA. The first day we visited a National park site, The National Watch & Clock Museum, had lunch and dinner in brew pubs and caught a movie. Day 2 started with a visit to the Ephrata Cloisters, a tour of Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery and a visit to the Landis Valley Museum. |

Valentine's Getaway 2018 |
|
Serendipitously got 2 email travel newsletters on the same day. The first describing how York County, PA is promoting itself as the Factory Tour Capital of the World, and the second with a Travelzoo offer for a stay at a York County B&B. Needed a Valentine's Day present so instantly booked it.
Encompassed several passions, National Parks, Factory Tours, B&B's and breweries. Visited 3 snack food companies and the Harley- Davidson plant, Gettysburg National Military Park, and a complete package lodging in Abbotstown, a previously unknown town, at the Altland House Inn, Grill and Pub. |

Christmas in New York City 2017 |
|
A sporadic and magical tradition to visit the Big Apple during the holiday season. A few firsts: we were treated to snow while ice skating in Bryant Park, commuted by Megabus, and dined at The Tavern on the Green. Since this was Jack's first time, a few tourist spots were required: Rockefeller Center, Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, Macy's, Central Park, shopping (sneakers for Jack), and a show (STOMP). |

First we spent a weekend in a beach house in Cocoa Beach, then hopped aboard the Disney Dream for a cruise to the Bahamas, and then finished with a day in Disney's Animal Kingdom. Everyone was so pleased with the cruise that we booked another one for next year, but this time in Alaska. Looking forward to it already. |

Women's March on Washington |
|
Uplifting experience and somewhat of a flashback to an anti Viet Nam war march. While we shared a deep disappointment and some anger at the election results, the mood was festive and positive. The organizers planned for 200,000 yet 1/2 million showed up making the Metro unusable. We were forced to walk the 2 1/2 miles from RFK stadium to the Mall and back, but it was fortunately a very pleasant day. We couldn't get close enough to the stage to hear much but being a participant was enough reward. |

Western Caribbean 2017 - New Orleans |
|
Back on land and able to spend some time in one of our favorite cities. First stop was to Destrehan Plantation which is not as impressive as some others, but still interesting. Then we wandered the French Quarter as is required of all tourists and caught a show at Preservation Hall and dinner at Acme Oyster House. The next day we took the streetcar to Armstrong Park and tried to visit New Orleans Jazz Historical Park, but it is under renovation, so we will have to return. Hopped back on the streetcar which took us to the World War II National Museum, which was very impressive and sobering. |

Western Caribbean 2017 - Chacchoben |
|
Docked in Costa Maya, Mexico, but immediately boarded a bus to our third Mayan ruin of the trip, Chacchoben. Too short of a day since we had to be back on board by 2:30 for the day and half cruise back to New Orleans. |
Photos |

Best shore excursion of the trip. Our second visit to a Mayan ruin, Altan Ha, and this one had larger more impressive structures and the park service installed stairways on three of them so one could climb to the tops. |

Second shore excursion to the Honduran island of Roatan. Visited Gumbalimba Park, an animal preserve and then spent a few hours on nearby Tubyana Beach. |

|
First shore excursion of cruise, and I couldn't wait to get off the ship. We docked in Cozumel Mexico, but then immediately boarding a ferry to Playa del Carmen, and then immediately took a bus to Tulum National Park, a Mayan ruins site. Beautiful ancient city perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf. Several significant structures have been excavated, but it was a bit disappointing, though understandable, that no one was permitted to climb them. (That wouldn't be the case in Belize.) |

|
A getaway weekend in our own backyard. Prompted by the opportunity to see a couple of Monty Python alumni, more than 40 years after catching the whole group in NYC. Stayed in a very nice B&B in the historic Jonestown neighborhood. Took walking tours of both Jonestown and Mount Vernon, visiting the Shot Tower, the Baltimore Basilica, The Walters Art Gallery, Westminster Burying Grounds (site of Poe's grave site) and the B&O Railroad Museum. Sampled a few very goods beers at The Brewer's Art, and avoided the Inner Harbor all weekend! |

Buffalo - August 2015 |
|
Long weekend catalyzed by the Buffalo Irish Festival. We couldn't make it to this year's Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, so gave this a try instead. Much smaller with only 2 stages and a handful of acts. Skipped Sunday since it was all repeat performances. Videos of some performances were too large for flickr, so they can be seen on YouTube. Flickr will also not permit a hyperlink so search for "Buffalo Irish Festival 2015 Gerald Hendricks" on YouTube. In addition we managed to hit 3 National Park sites, 3 brew pubs, 2 Frank Lloyd Wright properties, 2 grave site visits and a "never gets old" ride on The Maid of the Mist. |

An unexpectedly pleasant last minute trip. My sisters, Dad, Barbara and I headed to Orlando for three days after hearing that Uncle Bob had entered hospice. We were fortunate enough to arrive in time to say goodbye since he passed a few hours after our first days visit. Having two more days in Orlando, we made the best of a sad situation by going to Disney World. After a fun first day at the Magic Kingdom, Poppy suggested we go to EPCOT the final day. Barbara took the day off, but the rest of us enjoyed another day at the Happiest Place on Earth. |

A disappointing washout this year. Had planned on two days and enjoying two new celtic groups, but the skies opened up Saturday night and cut short the show by RUNA, and Paddy and The Pale Boys was just a bar band. Was raining Sunday morning, so we headed home. Pleasant surprises were the March Fourth Marching Band, an electric Mardis Gras band complete with stilt walkers and hula hoops, and a very nice B&B in Macungie. |

Acadia, July 1992 |
Memorable in so many ways. Barbara's first time camping, the girls forced to sleep in the car after their tent leaked, and waking before dawn so we could watch the sunrise on the 4th of July on top of Cadillac Mountain, the first light to reach North America. To top it off, we had to get out of the tent while the temperature was below freezing. One of our favorite parks, small but amazingly diverse. Traveled with Yigal Salingar, a visiting scholar, and his wife Rachel and their kids. We watched fireworks over Bar Harbor, which unfortunately frightened the poor kids since it reminded them of recent bombings in Israel. |
