On June 20, 1784, he married Phoebe Osborn; of their three children, only Susannah (Mrs Isaac Brandt, 1786-1876) survived infancy. After the death of his first wife circa 1788-89, William married Phebe Johnson (1769-1861) of Woodbridge, New Jersey, on August 28, 1790; their children included Mary Chapman (Mrs Joseph Pool Pierson, 1793-1881), John B.
