Capt. George Coggeshall, mariner and naval historian, made his first voyage in the schooner Charlotte, sailing from New York to Cadiz, and back to New York in 1779 as a cabin boy. His second voyage was in the same schooner to Savannah, thence to the Mediterranean and back to New York. He also sailed in the Brig Horatio and schooner Thomas, schooner Theresa, schooner Betsey and Polly, schooner Industry, ship Marshall, schooner Centurion (two voyages), three voyages in the schooner Hamilton, one in the brig Henry and Isabell, one in the ship Virginia, two in the pilot boat schooner Eliza, three voyages in the ship America. He commanded the letter-of-marque schooner David Porter in 1813 and 1814; commanded the letter-of-marque schooner Leo in 1814 and 1815; commanded the ship John Hamilton; made two voyages in the pilot boat Iris; made a voyage in the brig Enterprise and returned in the schooner Retrieve in 1819; commanded the sloop Volusia; commanded the pilot boat Sea Serpent; made a voyage from New York to Havana and back to New York in the schooner Swan in 1823; commanded the brig Nymph in 1824, also the ship Governor Clinton in which he had some very thrilling experiences; made four successful voyages in the brig Brilliant.
